Pre-Occupational Therapy Curriculum (F05)

2008 - 2009

Admission to the Professional Program in Occupational Therapy: 

 

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours, including the requirements identified in the table below, is required to be considered for admission to the professional program in Occupational Therapy.  (NOTE: all general education requirements should be completed prior to entering the professional program)
  • All requirements identified in the table below must be completed with no grade lower than a "C" (a grade of "C-" is not acceptable).
  • The professional program begins in Fall, continuing for three years toward a Master of Occupational Therapy.
  • The application deadline is February 28. For an application go to www.cphs.wayne.edu.
  • Admission to the professional program in Occupational Therapy is selective and competitive. Applicants must have have a minimum overall Grade Point Average of 3.00. The GPA will be based on grades in ENG 1020, ENG 3010, BIO 1510, BIO 2870, PHY 2130 & 2131, COM 1010, PSY 1020 (or 1010), PSY 2400, STA 1020 (or PSY 3010), American Institutions, and Basic Social Science. These courses must be completed by the end of the Winter Term preceding the application deadline. Fulfilling the minimum requirements does not assure admission.
  • Applicants must also document a minimum of 20 hours of contact with a registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Each biology and physics requirement must include a laboratory.
  • Time limitation: see the WSU Bulletin regarding the time limit for completing pre-professional sciences and the professional program.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to attend an Informational Meeting held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 259 Mack Avenue. Call 313-577-1716 for information.

    COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS (complete these by the deadlines to avoid Registration Holds)

    1. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION (four requirements):

    1. Basic Composition (BC): Fulfilled by ENG 1020 or 1050
    2. Intermediate Composition (IC): other options to ENG 3010; AFS 2390, ISP 4991; ENG 2050, 2100, 2110, 2120, 2210, 2310, 2390, 2570, 3050; ISP 3510; I H 2010;
    3. Writing Intensive course in major field (WI) (consult Major Department)

    2. MATHEMATICS COMPETENCY (MC) (to be completed by 30 hours by one method below):

    • Attain CLEP score of "50" or higher, an  AP score of "2" (no degree credit), or "25" on ACT Math exam OR
    • Transfer credit for the equivalent of MAT 1800 or higher taken at an accredited college OR
    • Place beyond the first "1000" level Math course on the Math Competency/Proficiency Examination OR
    • Complete a Math course at WSU numbered at the "1000" level or higher with a satisfactory grade.

    3. ORAL COMMUNICATION (OC) (to be completed by 60 hours by one method below):

    • Pass WSU Oral Communication Competency Exam (no credit hours granted) OR
    • Pass COM 1010 or ISP 1560 or ENG 3060

    4.COMPUTER LITERACY

    • Completion of college level computer course such as B E 1200; COM 3210; CSC 1000, 1050, or any higher level CSC course; IST 2710; or Pass the Computer Literacy Competency Exam; or transfer credit for a comparable course taken at another college or university (prior to earning 30 credit hours at WSU).

    5. CRITICAL THINKING (CT) (to be completed by 75 hours by one method below):

    • Pass WSU Critical Thinking Competency Exam 
    • Pass one of the following: B A 1010; ISP 3260; PHI 1050; COM 2110

    A given Subject Area Code (e.g. ANT, HIS, P S, etc.) may not be used more than twice; a course must be at least three semester hours to apply; and courses for Group Requirements may not be elected on a Passed/Not Passed basis.

    To determine your progress in meeting Preprofessional and Group Requirements, make an appointment with an Academic Advisor in the University Advising Center by calling 313 / 577-8889. The Advising Center, located at 1600 David Adamany Undergraduate Library, is open from 8:30 - 7:00 Monday and Thursday and from 8:30 - 5:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Summer hours are Mon.--Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 P.m.

    It is the student's responsibility to become familiar with and to complete all degree requirements.
