Pre-Nursing Curriculum (F05)

Admission to the College of Nursing:

  • Completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours, including the courses identified in the table below, is required to be considered for admission to the professional program in the College of Nursing: ENG 1020, BIO 1510, BIO 2200, BIO 2870, CHM 1020, CHM 1030, PSY 1010, PSY 2400, SOC 2000 or ANT 2100, and fulfillment of Mathematics Competency and English Proficiency.
  • Courses above must be completed with no grade lower than a "C" (a grade of "C-" is not acceptable)
  • Each biology and chemistry course must include a laboratory
  • Credit associated with ENG 1010, ENG 1080, and MAT 0991 does not apply toward minimum hours for admission or graduation.
  • The application deadline for the professional program is March 31.  Because applications will be accepted only until the applicant pool limit has been reached (but not leter than March 31), applicatns are encouraged to apply early.
  • Applicants for admission to the professional program must show evidence by June 1 of having completed all prerequisites.
  • Admission to the professional program is selective and competitive and is based on three major components: 1) GPA in pre-requisite courses; 2) GPA in science pre-requisite courses; 3) professional goal statement (completed online). A minimum Grade Point Average of 2.50 in pre-requisite courses is required to be considered. Fulfilling minimum course and GPA requirements does not assure admission.
  • Pre-Nursing course requirements below total at least 36 semester hours, attempting to complete them in two semesters is not recommended. Plan to take two years to complete the Pre-Nursing requirements, Other Requirements, and University Group Requirements.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit Internet-based TOEFL scores to the College of Nursing.  Minimum scores are: 101 (Total); 25 (Listening); 25 (Reading); 25 (Writing); 26 (Speaking).

  • Mathematics Competency (MC) (to be completed by 30 hours by one method below):
    • Attain CLEP score of "50" or higher, an  AP score of "2" (no degree credit), or "25" on ACT Math exam OR
    • Transfer credit for the equivalent of MAT 1800 or higher taken at an accredited college OR
    • Place beyond the first "1000" level Math course on the Math Competency/Proficiency Examination OR
    • Complete a Math course at WSU numbered at the "1000" level or higher with a satisfactory grade.

    Other Requirements:

  • Intermediate Composition (IC): ENG 3010 (to be completed by 75 hours); transferred credit does not meet this requirement unless equivalent to 3010. (for course completed Fall term 2008 or later, a grade of "C" or better is required)
  • Writing Intensive (WI) : fufilled during professional program
  • Human Nutrition NFS 2030: Or NFS 2210 also acceptable
  • Oral Communication (OC) (to be completed by 60 hours by one method below):
    • Pass WSU Oral Communication Competency Exam (no credit hours granted) OR
    • Pass COM 1010 or ISP 1560 or ENG 3060
  • Computer Literacy (CL):
    • Completion of college level computer course such as B E 1200; COM 3210; CSC 1000, 1050, or any higher level CEC course; IST 2710; or Pass the Computer Literacy Competency Exam; or transfer credit for a comparable course taken at another college (prior to completing 30 credit hours at WSU)
  • Critical Thinking (CT) (to be completed by 75 hours by one method below):
    • Pass WSU Critical Thinking Competency Exam OR
    • Pass one of the following: B A 1010 ; ISP 3260; PHI 1050; COM 2110

    Required Topical/Exposure Areas

  • Cultural Diversity (CD): (fulfilled in the professional program)
  • Ethical Issues in Society (EI) (PHI 1100 or PHI 2320 recommended)
  • Science, Technology and Society (ST): (fulfilled by NFS 2030)

    A given Subject Area Code (e.g. ANT, HIS, P S, etc.) may not be used more than twice; a course must be at least three semester hours to apply; and courses for Group Requirements may not be elected on a Passed/Not Passed basis.

    To determine your progress in meeting Preprofessional and Group Requirements, make an appointment with an Academic Advisor in the University Advising Center by calling 313 / 577-8889. The Advising Center, located at 1600 David Adamany Undergraduate Library, is open from 8:30 - 7:00 Monday and Thursday and from 8:30 - 5:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Summer hours are Mon.--Fri. 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

    It is the student's responsibility to become familiar with and to complete all degree requirements.
