Planning Process Model

  1. Identify the Decision to be Made
    • Be objective about the decision
    • Define the desired outcome
    • Look at the decision in context
  2. Gather Information
    • Obtain information about the problem
    • Determine how much time you have to make the decision
  3. Identify Alternatives
    • Think of different approaches
    • Brainstorm alternatives
    • Get ideas from others and your past experiences
    • Use your imagination
  4. Weigh Evidence
    • Evaluate all the alternatives
    • Weigh positives and negatives of each alternative
  5. Choose among alternatives
    • Select the best alternative
    • Combine the best parts of two or more alternatives
    • Plan how you will put your chosen alternative into action
  6. Take Action
    • Put your plan into action
  7. Review Decision and Consequences
    • Evaluate the outcome as compared to the one desired
    • Get feedback from others on how you are doing
  8. Make adjustments if needed beginning again with step 1.
