Rank is determined by the number of degree credits which the student has satsfactorily completed. The classifications are:
| Freshmen | 0 to 28.99 credits, inclusive |
| Sophomore | 29 to 55.99 credits, inclusive |
| Junior | 56 to 87.99 credits, inclusive |
| Senior | 88 credits or above |
Register/ Add / Override Approval
The"Register/Add/Override Approval" form is provided by Registration & Scheduling Office for use by a student who seeks approval to take a course on a Passed/Not Passed basis, to audit a course, to take a course that requires prior consent, to register/add a course after the 2nd week of classes, and to enroll in a closed section of a course.
To register during Priority Registration for a course on a Passed/Not Passed basis, the student must mark the appropriate box on the form, get permission from the dean's office (meaning the UAC if the student is enrolled in CFPCA or Liberal Arts & Sciences) in the form of a signature and UAC stamp on the form, and submit the form to the Registration Office after securing the necessary signatures.

Permission of the department offering the course is not required to register on a Passed/Not Passed basis. The advisor should inform the student that a course taken on a Passed/Not Passed basis will not fulfill a Group or major requirement or a pre-professional requirement. A student may not take more than one course in a given term on that basis, may not take more than six courses during his or her undergraduate career, and may not switch from P/NP to a graded basis or vice versa once classes have begun. These rules do not apply to courses offered exclusively on a S/U basis.
To audit a course, students in CFPCA or Liberal Arts & Sciences must secure the approval of the dean through the UAC. For Priority Registration, students file the form in the Dean's Office (see addresses above) of the college in which they are enrolled.
For courses that require prior written consent, the student must have the form stamped by the department, an authorization that presumably first requires whatever signature the form stipulates. The form is to be submitted to the Registration Office.
Permission to enroll in a closed section is granted or denied in many cases only by the instructor. For some courses or groups of courses, however, the department may authorize enrollment.
Students who have been excluded from Fine, Performing & Communication Arts or Liberal Arts & Science based on their academic performance may apply through the University Advising Center to be reinstated for the term following their one- year (i.e. three consecutive semesters) exclusion.
The application process is intended to reveal evidence that the student has given sufficient thought to the reasons behind his or her previous academic problems so as to avoid a recurrence of those problems and, more positively, to progress steadily toward a degree.
If the student's application is approved, the advisor and the student sign a Reinstatement Contract stipulating that the student must present grades for the coming term in order to register for the following term, that he or she may not present a grade below a "C" in any course for that term, that the student must reduce his or her total deficiency, and any other conditions that the advisor believes are warranted by the student's record and plans for earning a degree.
Request for Exception to Enrollment Policy
Students should be directed to the Office of the Registrar to file for exceptions to university enrollment policies, such as medical withrawals and tuition cancelation. The deadline to file for such an exception is not later than 60 calendar days following the end of the term in which the exception is requested.
In repeating a course the following rules apply:
- The grade, grade points and credits for an earlier attempt will be eliminated from the student's grade point average computation.
- The grade, grade points and credits of only the latest repetition will be included in the student's grade point average computation.
- The original grade in the course repeated will remain on the student's record. Each attempt at retaking the course will be indicated by an "E" next to the grade excluded from the gpa record and and "I' next to the grade included in the gpa record.
- Repeat overides must be entered into Banner in order for a student to enroll in a course again. The UAC is authorized to provide up to three repeat overrides for students enrolled in LS or FPCA. A repeat override for a fourth attempt must be given at the department level, and the fifth attempt must be given at the dean's level. WP, WF, and WN count as attempts as well as actual grades.
- Some departments, such as Math and foreign language will give all overrides for their own courses. Major departments will give overrides for upper-division courses.
After a degree has been granted, no grade computed in that degree may be changed.
Courses taken elsewhere which are similar to those for which a student has received a grade at WSU will not be transferable to Wayne State University and will not affect a student's WSU GPA.
NOTE: If it appears that a repeated course has not been caught and the gpa recalculated by the Registrar's office, send an email to recordsmaintenance@wayne.edu notifying them of the course number, term first taken and repeated term, student name and ID.
Each school and college at WSU has established residency requirements. These are as follows:
| School/College | Resident Credit Requirement |
|---|---|
| Health Sciences | Last 30 credit hours |
| Business | Last 32 credit hours |
| Education | Minimum 30 credit in College of Education During final year, no more than 10 transfer credits will be accepted Student must be in residence during the semester in which graduation requirements are complete For certificate programs, at least 15 credit hours must be completed at WSU |
| Engineering | Last 34 credit hours |
| FPCA | Last 30 credit hours |
| Liberal Arts & Sciences | Last 30 credit hours |
| IS | Minimum of 40 credit hours in WSU courses |
| Nursing | Last 30 credit hours |
| Pharmacy | Last 30 credit hours |
| Social Work | Minimum of 30 credit hours in School of Social Work |
NOTE: The definition of "the last 30 hours" means that the last 30 hours must consist exclusively of course work at Wayne State.
Students who plan to earn a degree in Fine, Performing & Communication Arts and Liberal Arts & Sciences are subject to following restrictions on credit:
- The Residence Requirement of these colleges means that the student's last 30 semester hours must be earned at Wayne State. Credit by exam does not disrupt residency if earned while enrolled in courses at WSU.
- Not more than 46 semester hours under the same Subject Area Code will apply toward the minimum of 120 hours required to graduate unless the program specifies a greater amount. All Bachelor of Arts degrees with the exception of Art History (for which the maximum is 48 hours) are subject to this limitation. For specialized programs such as the bachelor of music and the bachelor of fine arts, this limit does not apply.
- Not more than 16 semester hours of work in professional courses (e.g. Business Administration, Education, Engineering, etc.) will apply toward the minimum of 120 hours.
The Undergraduate Bulletin includes a procedural statement about approval of professional course credit. Although in practice the approval of this type of credit tends to assume the form of an absence of objection, advisors should, in the process of completing a Degree Audit, indicate their approval of up to a maximum of 16 semester hours.
Students pursuing a degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Science may not count credit hours earned by completing MAT 1110 and 1120 toward the degree.
For students who are majoring in Economics and who declared their major prior to the beginning of classes for the Winter Term of 1991, the Department of Economics allowed one course in Principles of Accounting to substitute for an elective course in Economics. Depending on whether the Accounting course was three credits or four, such students could count 19 or 20 hours of professional coursework toward the 120 hours required to graduate. This allowance does not apply to anyone who declared Economics as a major during or after the Winter Term of 1991.
- Not more than four credit hours in Physical Education Activity/Life Fitness Activities (PEA/LFA) will count towards a degree in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. No more than 8 credit hours of PEA/LFA courses will apply towards a degree in the College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts. It is important to disguish between activity credit and professional credit. In the latter category, such courses as "Officiating Techniques" and "Physiology of Exercise" have a Subject Area Code of "P E" when taken at Wayne State and come under the 16-hour limit described in # 3 above. Activity courses transferred to WSU usually have the prefix "P E" merely because that was the original Subject Area Code and it was programmed into the Student Records System.
- The restriction in Applied Music (MUA and/or MUP), which does not apply to students graduating from FPCA, limits a student to 16 credit hours. That total may not include more than four hours from the following: MUA 280, 281, 282, 283, 284, 285, 287, and 288.
- The restriction in Dance (DNC), which does not apply to students who plan to graduate from FPCA is 16 semester hours. Credits in Dance Education (DNE) are subject to the limitation under #3.
- The maximum amount of credit in Health courses (HEA) is eight hours. This restriction does not apply to students in FPCA.
- The limit on credit in Interdisciplinary Studies (formerly Weekend College) courses toward a degree in FPCA and Liberal Arts & Sciences, is 16 hours. NOTE: This restriction was waived beginning S/S 2009 term by Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS). For any ISP student changing to a CLAS program, all credit previously earned is transferable to a CLAS degree.
Because the following quarter system courses were cross-listed with Liberal Arts courses as indicated, they are not subject to the limitation and don't count towards the 16 credit hours:
HSS 3541 (Urban Humanities: Folk, Mass, Classical Cultures I) and
HSS 3711 (Interdisciplinary Social Sciences: Ethnic Studies I) which were cross-listed with SCS 0370 (Ethnic Studies I) in Monteith College;
HSS 3721 (Interdisciplinary Social Sciences: Work and Labor I) which was cross-listed with HIS 350 (An Historical View of Labor and Work in America); and
HSS 4731 (Interdisciplinary Social Sciences: Conflict Studies I) which was cross-listed with P S 0683 (International Conflict and Its Resolution) - The University will accept up to 64 semester hours from accredited two-year schools. In practice, all transferable credit from either four-year or two-year schools is posted to to the Wayne State transcript although not more than 64 hours from a two-year school or schools will apply toward the minimum number of hours required to graduate.
- Credits in Engineering Technology (ET) do not count towards graduation in any program except Engineering Technology.
- No more than 16 credits of ROTC courses may apply towards a degree in Fine, Performing & Communication Arts and Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Students who wish to take more than 18 credit hours must gain permission from his/her respective college. For students enrolled in FPCA and CLAS this permission must be given by the UAC.
Permission is granted based on the best judgement of the advisor. This judgement should be based upon past performance as well as reason given for the request. If the advisor thinks the request reasonable, he/she sends an e-mail message to REGREQUEST@LISTS.wayne.edu
Include the student's name, PID, academic term, and exact number of credits requested.
Let the student know that the request will take up to 24 hours. You will be informed when the request has been processed.
